Below is more detail on the history of the foundation and how it all started. Amazing that they have raised over £60k in the last nine years!

The Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation, Our Story So Far

In May 2009, I lost my mum after an 18-year battle with cancer. At the same time, my husband John, was 60. We had arranged a golf day at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club with about 40 family and friends. It was a tough decision to go ahead with the golf day and 60th celebrations as it was only two weeks after my mum’s death, but we talked about it and said mum would not want us to cancel but decided to do a small raffle for Cancer Research UK in her memory.

We had a great day, sad at times, but we managed to raise around £500, which was amazing. So our story began…

Everyone had such a great time they asked us to make it annual event, which we have each year since. Until 2013 we raised funds solely for Cancer Research UK, but we sat down and discussed how we wanted the money to be spent and decided to set up our own foundation so that we could give various charities a donation each year. We now donate, on a regular basis, to:

Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Nurses, Prostate Cancer Group, Acorns Children’s Hospice and Midland Air Ambulance.

Our golf day has progressed over the years, this year is our 10th annual golf day, we are going to have an amazing day and together with the golf we raise funds by a putting competition, beat the golf pro, coffee, cakes, company sponsored holes, plus a raffle and auction. Our auction goes very well and we have been supported by the top golf personalities, football clubs, motorcycle racing personalities.

To date, we have raised in excess of £60,000 and we are looking to increase that amount this year and our first golf day of the year, is on 6th July 2018 at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club. If anyone out there would like to sponsor a hole, £40, or donate a raffle prize, or even join us on the day, please contact the Pro Shop at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club, who will take the details for us, or email angela.gaskell@yahoo.com.

Try and join us, it’s a lot of fun and raises lots of money for many people to make their lives a little more enjoyable. Ange and John Gaskell.

The Rainbow Cancer Care Foundation main sponsors on the day:

    Thermotech Ltd
    Motorline Toyota - Stourbridge
    Rygor Mercedes - Worcester
    Streetbike - Halesowen
    Double 22 Racing
    Motorcycle Mart - Kidderminster
Plus the - Midland Air Ambulance Pod

Side note: John and Ange are amazing people and do so much for CMGC.

Bob Price and Sons were also on the case clearing out the ditches.

Over time they become overgrown, but they play a vital role in the winter and during periods of rain.

The drains pipes on the fairways lead into these ditches therefore having them cleared allows for the water to flow into these freely and stops them getting blocked.

Plus, for anyone that does hit their shots into the ditches, when cleared it is easier to find your ball!

More paths on the course have been added, we assessed the wet and high-traffic areas over the winter and have added new ones on the fifth of Deer Park by the tee and the 8th of Badgers Sett by the green.

The hardcore has been added, once this has settled the top layer of stone will go on. This will make access areas a lot easier and more comfortable going forwards.

    Deer Park Five

With a day of free time on their hands the greenkeepers managed to do a bit of the continuous improvement plan that was produced by the STRI visit in 2017. The bigger greenside bunker was located directly under several oak trees that are on the Wyre Forrest, this meant little natural light got over the bunker plus it was always full of tree debris. This made it a tricky and often unfair bunker shot with the lake direct opposite it.

It was recommended to keep the smaller one and fill in the larger one with a run off point. This will still make it a difficult chip shot but simply fairer to the golfer. The area has been over seeded and will remain GUR until playable.

The outer rim of the greenside lake has also been tidied up making it appear bigger to the eye.

  • Fairways are lovely at the moment! Just wish I could hit more of them!
